Charleston, WV – Parts of the West Virginia highlands will plunge into dangerous cold as an Extreme Cold Watch goes into effect late Saturday night through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston.

According to forecasters, wind chills may fall to 25 below zero across Northwest Pocahontas County and Southeast Randolph County, including communities near Snowshoe and Harman. NWS officials warn that wind chills this severe can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, and prolonged exposure may lead to hypothermia.

The coldest conditions are expected Sunday afternoon through Sunday night, particularly along the higher mountain ridges where winds will be stronger and temperatures will tumble well below freezing. The extended duration of frigid air could also lead to ruptured water pipes in uninsulated homes or cabins.

Emergency managers urge residents and visitors in the mountain region to dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and avoid prolonged time outdoors. Homeowners should wrap or drain exposed pipes or allow them to drip slowly to prevent freezing. With many seasonal cabins occupied in December, officials say preparation is especially important this weekend.

Travelers heading to mountain recreation areas, including Snowshoe, are advised to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared for sudden temperature drops along ridge tops.
