Rainelle, WV – Residents in Western Greenbrier County are being urged to prepare for dangerous conditions as an Extreme Cold Watch goes into effect late Saturday night through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg.

According to NWS meteorologists, wind chills may fall to 20 below zero, impacting communities such as Rainelle, Duo, and Quinwood. At these temperatures, frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, and the risk of hypothermia increases significantly with prolonged exposure.

The coldest window is expected Sunday afternoon through early Monday, when winds strengthen over the higher ridge tops and temperatures plunge well below freezing. While snowfall is not part of this specific alert, forecasters note that the extreme wind chills alone will pose a substantial hazard for anyone outdoors for extended periods.

Emergency officials urge residents to dress in several layers, wear insulated gloves and face coverings, and avoid unnecessary travel during the harshest conditions. Families are also encouraged to check on older relatives, neighbors, and those with limited heating resources. Portable heaters should be used safely and kept away from flammable materials, and fuel-burning devices such as generators or grills must never be used indoors due to carbon monoxide risk.

More updates from the National Weather Service will be issued as the Arctic air mass approaches the region.
