Gerrardstown, WV – Authorities uncovered an active methamphetamine lab inside a garage during a predawn operation in Gerrardstown on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of two men.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force executed a warrant around 6:56 a.m. on Driftwood Drive to apprehend Joseph Paul Boyer, 33, who was wanted for probation violations tied to firearms and narcotics. During the arrest, deputies reportedly found a clandestine meth lab inside the residence’s garage. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) dispatched a hazardous materials team from Pittsburgh to dismantle the operation.
While on scene, authorities also arrested Michael Addam Austin, 61, of Gerrardstown. Deputies allegedly recovered 109 grams of suspected methamphetamine, three Xanax tablets, about five grams of suspected ketamine, 75 grams of liquid Butralactone, and a large amount of cash during a search of Austin, the sheriff’s office said.
Boyer faces a fugitive from justice charge, with additional charges pending. He was remanded to Eastern Regional Jail. Austin was charged with operating a clandestine drug laboratory, manufacturing and possession with intent to deliver narcotics, and conspiracy to deliver controlled substances. He remains jailed on $50,000 bond.
Sheriff Rob Blair commended the joint effort of deputies, the U.S. Marshals Service and the DEA, stating that teamwork was key in safely securing the dangerous site.
“This case highlights the dangers our deputies and partner agencies face, day in and day out, and the importance of teamwork in keeping our community safe,” Blair said.
