Midland, Texas – Drivers across West Texas and southeastern New Mexico could face hazardous conditions Sunday as gusty winds sweep through the region, topping 50 mph in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT Sunday. Sustained south winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching 50 mph, are expected across cities including Midland, Odessa, Carlsbad, Hobbs, Andrews, and Fort Stockton.
Blowing dust may significantly reduce visibility on U.S. 62/180, I-20, and U.S. 285, especially near open fields and construction zones. High-profile vehicles, particularly along I-10 and I-20 corridors, may struggle with crosswinds. Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and loose debris.
In Lea County, New Mexico, conditions may be particularly dangerous near Carlsbad Caverns and open desert highways. Similar wind events earlier this year caused isolated power outages and minor property damage in the area.
The advisory affects over 20 counties spanning the Texas-New Mexico border, including Eddy, Borden, Gaines, and Pecos counties.
Winds are expected to ease late Sunday night, though additional advisories could be issued if gusts persist.
