Abilene, Texas – Strong wind gusts topping 40 mph are sweeping across West Texas this morning as a cold front pushes through the Big Country, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and a brief chance for light rain later today.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, winds have already shifted out of the north in areas like Rotan, Haskell, and Weinert, with gusts exceeding 40 mph early. The front will continue moving through Abilene, San Angelo, and surrounding communities through the remainder of the morning, ushering in cooler air with afternoon temperatures falling into the 50s.

Cities including Brownwood, Sweetwater, and Ballinger will see sustained gusty conditions through the afternoon, especially along U.S. 277 and U.S. 84 where crosswinds could impact high-profile vehicles. A slight chance of light rain develops late today into tonight, though totals will remain minimal.

Overnight lows will dip into the 40s, making for a noticeably cooler start Saturday. Highs will struggle to climb out of the mid-50s across much of the region.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items and use caution on area roadways due to strong winds. Conditions begin to settle slightly by Saturday, though cool air lingers.

Wind impacts remain in place through this evening, with additional updates possible if gusts increase.
