Lubbock, Texas – Breezy winds and scorching afternoon highs near 100°F are bearing down on West Texas today, with severe storms possible by late evening across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, isolated to scattered thunderstorms—some potentially severe—are expected to develop late Friday afternoon and continue into the evening, especially along and east of the I-27 corridor. High temperatures are forecast to reach 98°F in Lubbock, 99°F in Brownfield, and 97°F in Aspermont, with southerly winds between 10–20 mph.

The combination of heat and instability raises the risk of damaging winds, localized flooding, and frequent lightning. Communities including Childress, Plainview, and Friona should prepare for sudden downpours and reduced visibility on roads. Outdoor activities and travel during the late afternoon and early evening hours may be impacted.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor exposure during peak heat, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Storms are expected to diminish gradually after sunset.

Additional advisories may be issued this evening if storm intensity increases. Stay tuned to local updates for real-time warnings.
