Lubbock, Texas – Thunderstorms are set to move into the Lubbock region after 6 p.m. Tuesday, bringing the threat of strong wind gusts and pockets of heavy rainfall along the Caprock and west of I-27.
According to the US National Weather Service Lubbock, isolated to scattered storms will likely develop by early evening and continue through most of the night, with the highest risk for severe weather focused on areas along and west of I-27—including Lubbock, Brownfield, Plainview, and Childress. While widespread severe weather is not expected, some storms may bring wind gusts topping 40 mph and locally intense rain.
Residents in Brownfield, Friona, and Aspermont should be prepared for quickly changing weather and potential power outages caused by downed tree limbs or minor wind damage. Commuters on I-27 and surrounding highways are urged to reduce speed during downpours and watch for ponding on roads, especially between 7 p.m. and midnight. Charging devices and avoiding unnecessary travel during storm activity is advised.
This is the first significant round of storms for the region this week, with muggy overnight lows ranging from 64° in Friona to 74° in Aspermont. Additional updates may be issued if storms intensify or hazards increase overnight.
