Sierra Blanca, Texas – A severe thunderstorm stalled over Hudspeth County Monday afternoon is packing damaging winds and hail, prompting warnings for drivers and residents across far West Texas.
According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, the storm was located about 7 miles east of Sierra Blanca at 2:34 p.m. MDT and is nearly stationary. Radar indicated wind gusts up to 60 mph along with quarter-size hail, capable of damaging vehicles, siding, and trees.
The warning remains in effect until 3 p.m. MDT for east central Hudspeth County. While the storm is lingering over mostly rural areas, drivers on Interstate 10 near Sierra Blanca could encounter sudden wind shifts and hail-covered stretches of roadway. Power disruptions are also possible where stronger gusts strike utility lines.
Emergency officials urge anyone in the warning area to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building until the storm passes. Travelers are advised to delay trips through eastern Hudspeth County until conditions improve.
