Midland, Texas – Heavy rain could trigger localized flooding across West Texas between Sunday, March 1, and Thursday, March 5, as a wetter-than-normal pattern settles over the region.

According to NOAA’s 6-10 day outlook issued Monday, West Texas is favored to see above-normal temperatures during the March 1-5 stretch, along with above-normal precipitation. That combination points to repeated rounds of rain, with the potential for heavier downpours that could overwhelm dry, compacted soils and low-water crossings.

In the Permian Basin, including Midland and Odessa, multiple rain events may lead to ponding on roadways and rapid runoff in urban areas. Drivers along Interstate 20 should remain alert for standing water during heavier bursts, particularly during peak travel times.

Farther east, including Abilene and San Angelo, steady rainfall could create minor flooding concerns in low-lying neighborhoods and along creeks and drainage systems. Rural roads and oilfield access routes may become muddy or temporarily impassable if rainfall totals stack up over several days.

Communities near arroyos and normally dry washes should monitor conditions closely, as even moderate rainfall can produce quick rises. While temperatures will trend above normal and eliminate any wintry concerns, the primary threat will come from rainfall intensity and duration.

Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to monitor updates from the Texas Department of Transportation and local emergency management. Additional advisories may be issued as the March 1-5 window approaches and rainfall totals become clearer.
