Lubbock, TX – Residents across the South Plains should brace for severe weather this afternoon and evening as strong thunderstorms move through the region, according to the US National Weather Service Lubbock, Texas.
Forecasters say storms could produce hail up to the size of ping pong balls, wind gusts near 60 mph, and heavy rainfall capable of causing localized flooding. The greatest risk area includes Lubbock, Plainview, Matador, and surrounding communities.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of northwest and west-central Texas under a slight risk for severe weather, meaning scattered strong storms are likely to develop. Storm activity is expected to peak late this afternoon through evening before tapering off overnight.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, stay weather-aware, and be prepared to move indoors quickly if warnings are issued. Travel could become hazardous in areas of heavy rain and hail accumulation.
