Odessa, TX – Much of West and Southwest Texas will face a sharp drop in temperatures late Saturday night into Sunday morning, with forecasters issuing a Freeze Watch for areas including Midland, Odessa, Pecos, Fort Stockton, Monahans, Kermit, Mentone, Big Lake, Crane, Alpine, and surrounding communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, temperatures are expected to fall between 27° and 32°F, bringing the risk of frost and freeze damage to plants, crops, and unprotected plumbing. The watch remains in effect from early Sunday morning through mid-morning.
Residents across Ector, Midland, Ward, Pecos, Loving, Winkler, Reeves County Plains, Crane, Upton, Reagan, and the Davis Mountains foothills should prepare now for the cold snap. While the region often experiences chilly nights this time of year, temperatures dipping into the upper 20s could be enough to harm sensitive vegetation and exposed pipes.
Forecasters say widespread frost is likely, especially in rural areas and low-lying terrain where colder air tends to settle. Gardeners and agricultural operations may see damage to unprotected crops, and homeowners are encouraged to insulate outdoor faucets and cover vulnerable plumbing.
Pet owners are also urged to bring animals indoors or provide warm, dry shelter overnight. Even livestock areas should be checked to ensure water sources don’t freeze.
The National Weather Service advises taking precautions before temperatures begin to fall late Saturday night, as winds may calm—allowing the region to cool more rapidly before sunrise Sunday.
More cold air may follow early next week, though details remain uncertain.
