SAN ANGELO, Texas – Cooler air moved into West Texas overnight, but residents won’t find much relief as strong northeast winds and dry air keep the region under an elevated fire danger through Tuesday. The National Weather Service warns that gusty winds and low humidity will combine to create prime conditions for wildfires, and outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, winds will range from 10 to 15 mph, with occasional gusts higher, especially across the Concho Valley and Big Country. Afternoon highs will settle in the upper 70s to low 80s, slightly below Monday’s readings, but the dry air behind last night’s cold front will maintain critical fire weather levels through much of the day.

Local emergency officials urge residents to avoid any open flames, secure trailer chains to prevent sparks, and properly dispose of cigarettes. Even small fires could spread rapidly under today’s conditions.

Elevated fire weather advisories remain in effect through this evening, with calmer winds and milder humidity levels expected by Wednesday.
