Midland, Texas – Violent wind gusts are ripping through the Guadalupe Mountains tonight, with conditions strong enough to overturn high-profile vehicles and shut down safe travel through early Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. MDT / 7 a.m. CDT Monday for the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas and southeast New Mexico. Sustained northeast winds of 35 to 45 mph are accelerating through Guadalupe Pass, with peak gusts reaching up to 60 mph.
The most dangerous conditions are concentrated along U.S. Route 62/180 through Guadalupe Pass, where crosswinds are strongest and visibility may be reduced by blowing dust. Areas including Pine Springs, Queen, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park are experiencing the highest impacts, particularly at elevations above 7,000 feet.
Travel is strongly discouraged for campers, tractor-trailers, and other high-profile vehicles, as sudden gusts can push vehicles out of lanes or cause rollovers. Even standard vehicles may struggle to maintain control in exposed areas.
Drivers are urged to delay travel or use alternate routes until winds subside. Secure loose outdoor items and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions in mountain corridors.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken after sunrise Monday, but additional advisories may be issued if hazardous conditions persist.
