Lubbock, TX – The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for large portions of western and central Texas, extending into southwestern Oklahoma, effective until 7 p.m. CDT Friday, October 24, 2025.

According to the NWS, isolated thunderstorms currently impacting southwest Texas are expected to increase in coverage and intensity as they move north and east through the afternoon. These storms may produce very large hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter, damaging wind gusts reaching 80 mph, and a tornado or two.

Cities included in the watch area are Lubbock, Midland, San Angelo, Abilene, Fort Stockton, Alpine, and Plainview, as well as portions of southwest Oklahoma near Lawton and Guthrie.

Forecasters caution that the primary hazard is large hail, but wind damage and isolated tornado activity are also possible, especially in areas where storms merge or form lines later today. Residents are urged to stay alert for warnings, shelter indoors if storms approach, and secure outdoor items that could become airborne in strong winds.

The severe threat is expected to diminish after sunset as storms gradually weaken and move eastward.
