Lubbock, Texas – Triple-digit heat is closing in on parts of the South Plains Friday as Childress and Aspermont climb toward 100 degrees under sunny skies.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, areas off the Caprock are expected to reach highs between 92°F and 99°F today, with overnight lows staying warm — from the upper 60s to mid 70s. Lubbock will top out near 95°F before dipping to 70°F tonight.

Childress leads the heat index at 99°F with a mild low of 73°F, while Aspermont isn’t far behind at 98°F. Brownfield and Plainview are both in the low 90s, with Friona slightly cooler at 92°F and a low of 66°F. Skies will remain clear into the evening, offering little relief from the sun-soaked daytime hours.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak heat, stay hydrated, and check on pets and vulnerable neighbors. Air conditioners will be running hard, so consider reducing energy usage during the afternoon to avoid outages.

This heat trend is expected to continue into the weekend. Stay tuned for additional advisories if temperatures rise further.
