Abilene, Texas –
Residents across the Big Country should prepare for possible severe thunderstorms tonight, with storms likely between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. bringing quarter-sized hail and wind gusts reaching 60 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, isolated to scattered storms may move into the area Wednesday evening and continue into early Thursday. While the overall risk is considered marginal (level 1 of 5), individual cells could intensify quickly. The strongest storms could impact cities like Abilene, Sweetwater, San Angelo, and Ballinger, particularly in areas along and south of I-20.
Storms are expected to be brief but could produce damaging wind bursts and hail up to an inch in diameter. Lightning is also a concern with any stronger cells. Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary evening travel, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts—especially if venturing out during the high-impact window.
This marks one of several early summer storm events in West Texas, where similar isolated threats occurred in late May. More updates are expected through Wednesday as storm development is monitored.
Severe weather risk remains in place through 1 a.m. Thursday. Stay weather-aware and watch for new alerts.
