Lubbock, TX – An active round of showers and thunderstorms is expected across West Texas today, though most communities will see light rainfall, according to the National Weather Service in Lubbock. Forecasters say many locations across the South Plains hold only a 20% to 40% chance of receiving more than a half-inch of rain.
The highest rainfall probabilities are centered east of the Caprock, where deeper moisture and stronger storm activity may allow some locations to receive up to an inch. According to the National Weather Service, these heavier totals are mainly expected across the Rolling Plains, including areas near Paducah, Aspermont, Guthrie, Jayton, and Childress.
Showers will be fast-moving, limiting the duration of heavier downpours for most. Still, isolated pockets of brief heavy rain could lead to minor ponding on roadways, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Drivers are encouraged to slow down if visibility drops or water begins to collect on the pavement.
Meanwhile, rainfall amounts across the Lubbock metro, Plainview, Muleshoe, Levelland, and Slaton are expected to remain light—generally a quarter-inch or less in most neighborhoods. The combination of quick-moving storms and limited atmospheric moisture west of the Caprock should keep totals lower.
No severe weather is expected, but occasional lightning and brief gusty winds may accompany stronger cells. Conditions improve by late evening as the system shifts east.
