MIDLAND, Texas – A Freeze Warning is in effect for parts of West Texas as sub-freezing temperatures could plunge as low as 28 degrees early Thursday, threatening crops, outdoor plumbing, and sensitive vegetation across the Davis Mountains, Marfa Plateau, and Van Horn Highway 54 Corridor.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, the warning remains in place from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday, with frost and freeze conditions likely to damage unprotected plants and outdoor water systems. Residents in low-lying and rural areas could experience the coldest readings just before sunrise.
Officials are urging residents to take precautions now — bring pets indoors, cover exposed pipes, and move potted plants or delicate vegetation to sheltered areas. Gardeners and ranchers across Jeff Davis, Presidio, and Culberson counties should prepare for a hard freeze capable of ending the growing season.
Temperatures are expected to recover slightly by late Thursday morning, but another round of cold air could arrive later this week, keeping overnight lows near freezing across much of West Texas.
Warnings remain in effect through 9 a.m. Thursday.
