Toyah, Texas – A light earthquake was recorded northwest of Toyah late Friday evening, according to the Texas Seismological Network (TexNet). The 2.5-magnitude tremor struck about 54 kilometers northwest of the town at a shallow depth of roughly 3.9 kilometers. No damage or injuries have been reported.

According to TexNet, the quake was automatically detected around 6:52 p.m. local time and is part of a region that has seen occasional seismic activity in recent years, often linked to natural fault movement or deep subsurface activity. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the quake’s magnitude and location data shortly after the event.

While minor, residents across Reeves County and parts of western Texas may have felt a brief jolt or rumble. Shallow earthquakes such as this one can produce short-lived shaking but rarely cause structural damage.

Emergency officials remind residents that even small quakes serve as a good opportunity to review safety plans and secure heavy furniture or fixtures that could shift during stronger tremors.

No aftershocks have been reported, but monitoring continues across the Permian Basin region through the weekend.
