Midland, Texas – A minor earthquake struck north of Midland late Thursday morning, briefly shaking parts of the Permian Basin but causing no immediate reports of damage.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 2.8 earthquake occurred at 11:49 a.m. UTC Thursday, about 14 kilometers south of Ackerly and roughly 25 miles north of Midland. The quake originated at a depth of approximately 4.9 kilometers and was automatically recorded by regional seismic networks.

While a magnitude 2.8 event is considered light, residents in northern Midland County and parts of Martin County may have felt a quick jolt. Communities along U.S. Highway 87 between Midland and Lamesa sit closest to the epicenter.

West Texas has experienced increased seismic activity in recent years, particularly across the Permian Basin. Most quakes in this magnitude range do not produce structural damage but can be noticeable indoors.

No injuries or infrastructure impacts have been reported. The USGS and TexNet continue monitoring the area for additional activity, though stronger aftershocks are not expected at this time.
