Memphis, TN – The National Weather Service in Memphis is warning residents across West Tennessee to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding today, with the greatest risk from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the US National Weather Service Memphis, showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue through the day, bringing 1 to 2 inches of rain across most of the region. Some localized areas near the Tennessee–Kentucky border, including Paris, Union City, and Dyersburg, could see 2 to 3+ inches of rainfall and brief flash flooding.

The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for excessive rainfall, meaning flooding will be mainly localized, especially in urban areas, roads, and small streams. Commuters are urged to use caution and avoid driving through flooded roadways.

Officials emphasize safety:

  • Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
  • Never walk or drive into floodwaters.
  • “Turn around, don’t drown,” the NWS reminded residents.

Rainfall is expected to taper off by evening, but saturated ground conditions may linger into Wednesday morning. Motorists traveling north from Memphis toward Jackson and Clarksville should be prepared for reduced visibility and ponding on roads throughout the day.
