Memphis, Tenn. – Heavy rain and thunderstorms could disrupt Memorial Day plans across western Tennessee, with Memphis bracing for multiple rounds of severe weather through Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms will increase Sunday evening and continue through Memorial Day, bringing a 90% chance of rain with possible rainfall totals exceeding three inches. Some storms could produce heavy downpours, especially Monday afternoon and evening, increasing the risk of localized flash flooding in low-lying areas and along the Wolf River and Nonconnah Creek.
Rain and storm chances remain high in Memphis (zip code 38127) and nearby areas like Bartlett, West Memphis, and Germantown. Periods of intense lightning and wind gusts may impact I-40 and I-55 travel corridors. The heaviest storms are expected Sunday night through Monday night, followed by more scattered showers on Tuesday.
Residents should monitor alerts, avoid flood-prone roads, and charge mobile devices in case of power outages. Outdoor Memorial Day plans may need to be rescheduled as picnic areas and parks face muddy and unsafe conditions.
Storm chances diminish by Wednesday morning, but a slight risk of rain lingers. Additional advisories could be issued if rainfall totals climb or flash flooding begins.
