Grand Rapids, MI – A powerful winter storm is set to impact western and central Michigan beginning Wednesday morning, bringing heavy snow, gusty winds, and dangerous travel conditions through Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

The Winter Storm Warning, in effect from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 7 p.m. Thursday, covers multiple counties including Allegan, Barry, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Mason, Lake, Osceola, Oceana, Newaygo, and Mecosta. Forecasters expect 2 to 8 inches of snow, with locally higher amounts in persistent lake-effect bands and winds gusting up to 55 mph.

Officials warn that visibility could drop below one-quarter mile at times, creating whiteout conditions that could make travel “treacherous and potentially life-threatening.” Rapid changes in weather and road conditions are likely, especially near the lakeshore and along major routes including US-31, I-196, and I-94.

Residents are urged to avoid travel if possible. Those who must drive are advised to carry a winter emergency kit with food, water, blankets, and a flashlight. Lake-effect snow may create sharp contrasts between heavy snow and clear skies over short distances.
