Grand Rapids, MI – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for much of west and central Michigan through 7 p.m. Thursday, with the National Weather Service warning of heavy snow, powerful winds, and dangerous travel conditions across several counties.
According to forecasters, 3 to 8 inches of snow are expected across Mason, Lake, Osceola, Oceana, Newaygo, and Mecosta Counties, while Allegan, Barry, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, and Calhoun Counties could see 3 to 7 inches. Wind gusts may reach up to 55 mph, creating blowing snow and near-zero visibility in some areas.
Travelers are warned that whiteout conditions could develop suddenly, especially in lake-effect snow bands along U.S. 131, I-96, and I-94, making roads treacherous and potentially life-threatening. The weather service notes that conditions may vary dramatically over short distances, with some communities seeing intense snowfall while others experience brief breaks.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for rapidly changing road conditions, and keep an emergency kit in their vehicles. Officials remind drivers to monitor updated forecasts and road alerts through Michigan 511 before heading out.
