Grand Rapids, MI – A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for a large portion of West and Central Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek, effective from 7 a.m. Saturday through 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.
Forecasters expect heavy snow across the region, with 6 to 10 inches likely inland and 8 to 12 inches possible closer to the lakeshore in Ottawa, Allegan, Van Buren, and Kalamazoo Counties. The heaviest snow and worst travel conditions are expected Saturday afternoon through Saturday night, when snowfall rates and gusty winds will reduce visibility to below one-quarter mile at times.
Roads, bridges, and overpasses will quickly become slick and hazardous, with snow-packed surfaces and blowing snow creating whiteout conditions in open areas.
Officials are advising residents to avoid travel if possible, and to use extreme caution if driving is necessary. Drivers should allow extra time, reduce speed, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
The snow is expected to taper off by late Sunday morning, but cold temperatures will likely keep roadways icy into the start of the workweek.
