Grand Rapids, Michigan – Dangerous winter storm conditions are expected across much of west Michigan beginning Sunday afternoon, as the National Weather Service issues multiple Winter Storm Warnings through early Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. EST Tuesday for Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan, Van Buren, Lake, Newaygo, and Kent counties. Earlier Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for some areas until 7 a.m. Sunday, before conditions rapidly worsen later in the day.

Forecasters expect heavy snow and significant blowing and drifting, with total accumulations ranging from 4 to 8 inches, depending on location. Along the Lake Michigan shoreline, including Muskegon, Ludington, Holland, Grand Haven, and South Haven, near-blizzard conditions are possible as winds gust up to 40 mph.

The National Weather Service warns that whiteout conditions are expected at times, making travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening, especially on north–south roadways, which are more vulnerable to drifting snow. Conditions are likely to deteriorate rapidly Sunday evening and persist through Monday’s morning and evening commutes.

Inland areas, including Grand Rapids, Fremont, Baldwin, and Hart, are also expected to see hazardous travel, with snow-covered roads redeveloping quickly even after treatment. Visibility may vary sharply over short distances due to shifting lake-effect snow bands.

Officials strongly urge residents to delay all non-essential travel during the storm. Those who must travel should carry a winter survival kit, including warm clothing, food, water, and emergency supplies, in case they become stranded.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve Tuesday morning as winds weaken and snowfall tapers.
