Grand Rapids, MI – A powerful winter storm continues to impact west and southwest Michigan, prompting the National Weather Service to keep a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 7 a.m. EST Tuesday for several counties, including the Grand Rapids metro area.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, heavy snow combined with strong winds is creating near-blizzard to blizzard-like conditions, with dangerous travel expected through early Tuesday morning. Additional snowfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are forecast, with wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph, causing widespread blowing and drifting snow.

Counties under the warning include Kent, Lake, Newaygo, Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan, Van Buren, Mason, and Oceana. Cities and communities impacted include Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Holland, Grand Haven, Ludington, Fremont, Baldwin, Jenison, South Haven, and Hart.

Forecasters warn that visibility may drop below one-quarter mile, especially in open areas and along highways running north–south. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick and hazardous, with rapidly changing conditions making travel unpredictable and potentially life-threatening.

Emergency officials strongly urge residents to delay all non-essential travel. Those who must travel are advised to drive slowly, allow extra stopping distance, and carry a winter survival kit, including blankets, a flashlight, food, water, and extra clothing in case of becoming stranded.

Snowfall rates may briefly intensify at times, worsening road conditions overnight. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise Tuesday as winds weaken and snowfall tapers off.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and heed all warnings as this winter storm continues to impact West Michigan.
