Grand Rapids, Mich. – Beachgoers along Lake Michigan will see sunny skies today, but conditions are expected to grow more dangerous through the weekend as waves increase and rip currents develop.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, water temperatures remain cold, between 54 and 65 degrees, following recent offshore winds. While today’s swim risk is low with waves under a foot, swimmers are urged to use caution due to the chilly water.
By Saturday, winds will strengthen, pushing waves to two to four feet. That will create a moderate swim risk, with forecasters advising against entering the water. Even stronger conditions are likely Sunday, with waves reaching three to six feet and a high swim risk posted along the lakeshore.
Communities from Holland to Muskegon and northward toward Ludington could see the most dangerous rip currents, making swimming especially hazardous. Safety officials urge beach visitors to wear life jackets, stay close to shore, and avoid swimming near piers and breakwalls where currents are strongest.
Beach hazards are expected to remain elevated through Sunday evening, with updates issued if conditions worsen.
