Grand Rapids, Michigan – Winter weather is set to make a noticeable return across West Michigan beginning Wednesday and Thursday, with multiple rounds of snow and colder temperatures expected to follow into next week, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

In a Tuesday update, the National Weather Service said the region will first see light to moderate snowfall midweek, followed by a more sustained winter pattern from Friday into next week. Forecasters noted that each successive system will bring colder air, reinforcing winter conditions across the area.

Snowfall totals for Wednesday into Thursday are expected to vary by location. Along the Lake Michigan shoreline, Ludington and South Haven are forecast to receive 4 to 6 inches of snow, while Muskegon could see 2 to 4 inches. Farther inland, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Big Rapids, and Lansing are forecast to receive around 1 to 2 inches, with Jackson expected to see about 1 inch.

The snow will be followed by additional chances as colder air settles in, increasing the potential for lake-effect snow and reinforcing winter travel hazards. The National Weather Service emphasized that this pattern marks a transition toward more persistent winter conditions, stating that “real winter is on the way.”

Travel impacts are possible, especially during periods of accumulating snow, with slick roads and reduced visibility likely at times. Commuters, students, and those with outdoor plans later this week should prepare for changing conditions and allow extra travel time.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates closely as snowfall amounts and timing may be refined with each passing system. Additional advisories or warnings could be issued as the colder pattern becomes established.
