Morning frost clings to windshields across Grand Rapids as another surge of Arctic air tightens its hold on West Michigan. A quiet start gives way to frequent snow showers by Friday, signaling a sharper return to winter’s grip just in time for early December travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, scattered snow showers are expected to develop Friday afternoon, becoming more widespread Saturday with up to an inch or two of accumulation possible by Sunday. While totals will stay light, quick bursts of lake-effect snow could briefly lower visibility on major routes like US-131 and I-96.

Daytime highs will stay cold — near 20°F Friday and around 32°F Saturday — with lows dipping into the teens. Gusty northwest winds will push wind chills into the single digits, making the air feel sharper than it looks.

By Sunday, lake-effect bands could briefly intensify before easing late in the day. Conditions remain chilly and mostly cloudy through early next week, with highs struggling to reach the mid-20s on Monday. Meteorologists warn that any melting snow may refreeze, creating black ice on bridges and untreated side roads.

Beyond this weekend, long-range models hint that another round of heavier lake-effect snow could arrive December 11–17, just as holiday travel ramps up across the Great Lakes region.

Plan for slow travel this weekend — keep extra time for errands, check road cameras before heading out, and watch for slick spots near the lakeshore.
