Grand Rapids, MI – Lower Michigan woke up to a thick blanket of snow Sunday morning after a powerful winter storm dumped between 8 and 12 inches across much of the region. The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids reported the heaviest accumulation occurred Saturday evening into early Sunday, creating slick travel and challenging plowing conditions overnight.

According to preliminary snowfall reports, Zeeland, Spring Lake, and areas east-southeast of Hudsonville each recorded 12 inches of snow—the highest totals in the state. Other significant reports included Belmont with 11.6 inches, Gull Lake and Holland with 11.5 inches, and Marshall, Gobles, Grandville, and Battle Creek each measuring around 10 inches. East Grand Rapids reported 9.8 inches.

The storm developed early Saturday morning as lake-effect bands intensified over Lake Michigan, steadily spreading inland throughout the day. By Saturday night, visibility dropped below a quarter mile in some areas, prompting multiple travel advisories. Snowfall gradually tapered off by Sunday morning.

While road crews worked through the night, many secondary roads remained snow-covered into Sunday afternoon. Motorists were urged to drive cautiously and allow additional travel time.

Forecasters noted that colder air behind the system will keep temperatures below freezing through early in the week, maintaining slick conditions in shaded and untreated areas.
