Grand Rapids, MI – Rain is expected to develop across West Michigan this afternoon before transitioning into wet snow during the evening, bringing minor accumulations and travel concerns.
According to the US National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, rain will begin mid-afternoon and mix with snow by late afternoon and evening. Total snow accumulation is expected to remain light, with a dusting to around 1 inch possible by midnight. Temperatures, which will start in the mid-40s, are forecast to fall sharply once precipitation begins.
South winds will also increase, reaching speeds of 10 to 20 mph, which may further contribute to reduced visibility during snow showers. While road surfaces are currently above freezing, forecasters warn that untreated surfaces could become slick after sunset, especially in rural and elevated areas.
Residents in Grand Rapids, Muskegon, and Kalamazoo should plan for slower evening commutes and monitor local alerts. This type of springtime weather mix is not uncommon in West Michigan, where April frequently sees brief returns to winter-like conditions.
Travelers should allow extra time and check road conditions through MDOT before heading out tonight. Drivers are advised to use headlights, reduce speed, and watch for icy patches, especially on bridges and overpasses.
