GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – West Michigan woke up to frosty fields and windshield scraping Friday as the first widespread chill of October settled in. Temperatures dipped near freezing for inland counties, signaling the season’s first true taste of fall.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, areas east of U.S. 131 saw patchy frost early Friday morning, though warmer conditions will build into the weekend. No additional weather hazards are expected through midweek, giving residents a much-needed stretch of dry, sunny days for leaf-peeping and fall cleanup.

Drivers along I-96 and I-196 should expect clear, dry pavement for weekend travel, while early risers may still encounter light fog in low-lying valleys. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) advises motorists to remain alert for slick spots where frost lingers on bridges or shaded roads.

Daytime highs will rebound to the upper 60s Saturday and near 70 by Sunday, creating ideal weather for outdoor events and pumpkin patch visits. By Columbus Day Monday, sunshine and light winds will dominate, with highs reaching the lower 70s—perfect for late-season yard work or scenic fall drives along the lakeshore.

Residents are encouraged to cover sensitive plants and disconnect garden hoses before the next chill later next week. “The first frost reminds us that it’s time to prepare for colder nights,” forecasters said.
