Grand Rapids, Mich. – A chilly start to beach season continues along Lake Michigan today as cold lake temperatures and a weak cold front limit swim-friendly conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a front moving south across the lake may trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Air temperatures are expected to hover between 58 and 63 degrees through Saturday, while wave heights remain low at 1 to 3 feet. Swim risk is also low, but officials urge caution due to water temperatures ranging from 45 to 52 degrees — cold enough to cause hypothermia in minutes.

From Holland to Muskegon and north toward Ludington, beachgoers should wear wetsuits if entering the water and avoid prolonged exposure. While the weather clears by Sunday with mostly sunny skies and highs near 65°F, lake water will remain dangerously cold through the weekend.

Low wave activity reduces rip current threats, but officials still recommend checking beach hazard statements and avoiding swimming alone.

No advisories are currently in effect, but updates will continue as weekend crowds grow and conditions change.
