West Glacier, Mont. – Visitors heading into Glacier National Park this weekend may face harsh winter conditions as a strong storm targets the high elevations late Saturday night into Sunday. Snowfall, wind, and cold temperatures could disrupt travel and create dangerous backcountry conditions above 5,500 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the West Glacier region, including Logan Pass and the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Between 2 and 6 inches of snow are likely, with a 50% chance of 6 inches or more above 7,000 feet. Wet and windy weather will combine with the snowfall to create difficult travel and elevated risks for exposure, hypothermia, and frostbite.
Officials warn that road closures and disruptions to normal activities in Glacier National Park are possible, particularly along higher stretches of Going-to-the-Sun Road. Hikers, campers, and hunters are urged to delay plans or prepare with cold-weather gear, extra food, and emergency supplies.
The storm system is expected to move out by midday Sunday, but forecasters say additional early-season snow events are possible as October progresses. Travelers should monitor updated warnings and check park service alerts before heading into high terrain.
