Sacramento, CA – West Coast residents could be treated to another Northern Lights show tonight, as a powerful solar storm continues to push auroral activity far south along the Pacific Coast. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center reports that G3–G4-level geomagnetic storm conditions remain in place, keeping the Aurora Borealis visible across parts of California, Oregon, Nevada, and Washington.
According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, skies will remain mostly clear early this evening, especially across interior valleys and foothill regions, before clouds and moisture increase overnight. The best chance to view the Northern Lights will be after sunset until about 10 p.m., facing north and away from bright city lights.
Residents in northern California, including Redding and Chico, along with southern Oregon and northern Nevada, could spot faint red or green glows low on the horizon if skies stay clear. Even San Francisco Bay Area residents may glimpse color bands briefly before coastal clouds roll in.
Temperatures will remain mild tonight, dipping into the 40s and 50s, with highs Friday climbing into the 60s and 70s ahead of an incoming Pacific storm system that will bring rain to the coast by the weekend.
If you missed the earlier displays, tonight could be the final chance to view the Northern Lights along the West Coast before storm clouds and onshore winds end visibility later this week.
