Los Angeles, California – A fast-building heat surge will push inland California temperatures into the mid-90s by Saturday afternoon, increasing wildfire concerns and straining energy demand across the state.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center, much of California and Nevada will run 20 to 35 degrees above normal through the weekend, with widespread record highs likely. Peak temperatures will climb into the 90s across California’s Central Valley, Inland Empire, and parts of the Bay Area’s interior, while southern Nevada approaches triple digits.

In California, Fresno, Bakersfield, and Riverside could all reach 93 to 97°F by late Saturday, while downtown Los Angeles holds in the 80s but inland valleys run significantly hotter. PG&E and Cal ISO are monitoring grid demand as air conditioning use spikes earlier than typical for March. In Nevada, Las Vegas is expected to reach 98 to 100°F, raising heat illness concerns for outdoor workers and tourists.

Rapid snowmelt in the Sierra Nevada may accelerate river flows into the San Joaquin and Sacramento basins, increasing cold-water hazards despite warm air temperatures.

Residents should avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, hydrate frequently, and check cooling systems now. Additional advisories remain possible through early next week as the heat persists.
