West Chicago, Ill. — On Monday, June 16, the West Chicago Police Department announced plans for 4th of July traffic enforcement. The news release said the campaign will focus on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The campaign will run from June 20 through July 7. The three weekends leading up to and after Independence Day will be strictly enforced.
“We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” said Support Services and Investigations Commander Adam Reavley in the press release. “It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink or use cannabis or other impairing substances.”
The West Chicago Police Department is partnering with the Illinois State Police and more than 200 other local police departments and sheriff’s departments to make this effort statewide. The West Chicago news release offers alternatives to drunk driving and precautions to take in order to celebrate the holiday safely. The department encouraged the public not to let friends or family drive impaired. Those planning to drink should give their keys to a designated driver before going out. Taxi, mass transit or ride sharing services are available to those too impaired to drive. The department suggested calling a sober friend or family member to pick you up. Drivers should report impaired driving to law enforcement. Drivers should also ensure that all passengers in their vehicle are wearing a seatbelt.
“Our officers will be working diligently to keep impaired drivers off the road and ensure everyone is buckled up,” Reavley said.
