Black River Falls, Wis. – The National Weather Service in La Crosse has continued a Freeze Warning for Taylor, Clark, and Jackson counties from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday, with temperatures expected to dip as low as 29 degrees. The cold snap will mark the first widespread freeze of the fall, signaling the end of the growing season across west-central Wisconsin.

Forecasters say skies will clear and winds will calm overnight, allowing temperatures to plunge below freezing before sunrise. Frost will be widespread in low-lying areas near Black River Falls, Medford, and Neillsville, with a few rural spots possibly reaching the upper 20s.

According to the Weather Service, the cold could kill crops and damage unprotected pipes or outdoor plumbing. Residents are urged to cover tender plants, drain garden hoses, and wrap exposed pipes ahead of the freeze.

Early-morning motorists on Highway 10, Highway 95, and I-94 should be alert for frost on bridges and shaded roadways. Sunshine will return later Wednesday morning, but highs will stay in the upper 40s to low 50s under cool northwest breezes.

Another cold night is expected Wednesday before a slow warm-up into the weekend.
