San Angelo, Texas – A winter storm is expected to bring freezing rain and sleet across West Central Texas this weekend, creating the potential for hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service offices in San Angelo and Abilene, a cold front will move through the region Friday, allowing rain to transition to freezing rain late this afternoon and evening as temperatures drop to or below freezing. The wintry precipitation threat is expected to continue through Sunday morning.
Forecasters say ice accumulations are most likely to range between 0.3 and 0.5 inches across much of the region. There is also a low, but notable, chance that ice totals could approach three-quarters of an inch in isolated areas. If higher ice amounts occur, road conditions could become extremely dangerous.
The National Weather Service warns that travel impacts may worsen quickly once freezing rain begins. Ice buildup on roads, bridges, trees, and power lines could lead to slick driving conditions and possible power disruptions, especially during periods of heavier precipitation.
Forecast timing shows two main waves of wintry precipitation. The first is expected Friday evening through early Saturday morning, followed by a second round Saturday afternoon into the overnight hours. Wintry precipitation is expected to taper off around sunrise Sunday.
Residents are urged to closely monitor forecast updates, avoid unnecessary travel once freezing rain develops, and prepare now for potentially hazardous conditions through the weekend.
