Abilene, Texas – Near-record heat is building fast across West Central Texas, with afternoon temperatures approaching dangerous levels by peak heating hours this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, highs will reach 98°F in Abilene by Saturday afternoon and hold near that level into Sunday. San Angelo is expected to climb to 97°F Saturday and 96°F Sunday. These readings sit 20 to 25 degrees above normal for mid-March, when typical highs are in the mid to upper 60s.
The strongest concern centers on Sunday, where Abilene has an 80% chance of tying or breaking its standing record of 92°F, while San Angelo holds a 76% chance of surpassing its record. Even Saturday brings a moderate risk for record-challenging heat, especially in areas west of U.S. Highway 83.
This level of early-season heat increases strain on power usage and raises the risk of heat-related illness, particularly during the 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. window. Outdoor workers and residents without access to cooling should take frequent breaks and hydrate consistently.
Conditions remain hot and dry through the weekend, with little relief expected into early next week. Additional heat advisories may be issued if temperatures trend higher.
