Abilene, Texas – Dangerous heat continues through Friday across West-Central Texas with highs pushing 100 to 103 degrees before a sharp cooldown arrives for the weekend. Drivers and outdoor workers are urged to take extra precautions as heat index values climb into the triple digits by Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, a cold front will push into the region Saturday, dropping highs into the low to mid-80s and increasing rain chances to between 45% and 65% through early next week. The shift comes as forecasters also track Hurricane Lorena in the Pacific, which could feed additional moisture into the southern Plains.

Rainfall will be scattered but could bring brief downpours, lightning, and slick roads, especially around Abilene, San Angelo, and Junction. Officials warn that while drought-stricken soils can absorb some water, heavier bursts may cause isolated flooding in low-lying areas.

Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat until the front arrives, then prepare for changing road conditions as storms develop.

Widespread showers are most likely Sunday into Monday, with chances lingering into Tuesday. Additional advisories may be issued if Lorena’s moisture surge strengthens storms farther north.
