Abilene, Texas – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to push across West Central Texas Sunday night, bringing the risk of large hail and damaging winds from around 8 p.m. through 7 a.m. Monday. The greatest threats center on Abilene, San Angelo, and communities north and east, with hazards likely to impact overnight travel and early morning commutes.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, storms will develop north of the region this afternoon, then sweep south and east through the evening and overnight. The primary concerns are hail up to golf-ball size and winds gusting above 60 mph. A few storms could also produce isolated tornadoes, especially in rural zones north of Interstate 20.
Cities along Highway 277 and US 83—including Stamford, Sweetwater, and Ballinger—could experience the most intense storms late Sunday night. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm, and charge cell phones in case of power outages. Emergency crews and TxDOT are monitoring for downed trees and power lines, especially where the strongest storms track.
Severe weather risks will persist until daybreak Monday, with additional updates possible as the situation evolves. Residents should keep NOAA weather radios and alerts on overnight, as warnings could arrive with little notice.
