INDOT issued the alert as crews responded to several vehicles that lost control on the slick interstate, causing a chain reaction of crashes. Images from state traffic cameras show a long backup of semis and passenger vehicles stretched across snow-packed lanes as responders work to clear the scene.
The westbound shutdown is impacting drivers heading toward Terre Haute, where snowfall has continued to intensify through the afternoon. Transportation officials are urging motorists in West Central Indiana to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel while road conditions remain hazardous.
No injury information has been released, and INDOT has not yet given an estimate for when the interstate will reopen. Plow crews are active throughout the corridor but are being slowed by the heavy traffic backup.
