Springfield, Ill. – Central Illinois will swelter under seasonably hot and humid conditions through Saturday, with heat indices climbing to around 100 degrees and potentially reaching 105 in some locations. The National Weather Service warns that breezy conditions Saturday afternoon may offer little relief before scattered storms move into west-central parts of the state Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a frontal boundary will trigger several rounds of storms beginning late Saturday and continuing daily through at least Tuesday. Strong wind gusts and brief heavy rainfall are possible with the initial storms, especially along and north of Interstate 70.
Communities from Jacksonville to Bloomington should prepare for muggy overnight lows staying in the mid-70s through Sunday, increasing the risk for heat-related illness. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, stay hydrated, and ensure pets have access to shade and water.
Road travel late Saturday night may be impacted by sudden downpours, and more widespread storm activity is possible Monday as storm chances rise to near 60%.
Heat and storm alerts may be updated through early next week as the unsettled pattern continues.
