Wenatchee, WA – Dangerous blizzard conditions are expected to impact western Chelan County early Wednesday, with heavy snow, strong winds, and near-zero visibility making mountain travel extremely hazardous through midday.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to noon Wednesday for western Chelan County, including Stevens Pass, Holden Village, and Stehekin. Snowfall totals of 10 to 20 inches are expected in most areas, with lower totals of 4 to 8 inches possible near Stehekin.
Forecasters say wind will be a major factor in this storm. Gusts up to 50 mph are expected, creating blizzard conditions with widespread blowing and drifting snow. Visibility may drop to near zero at times, especially along Stevens Pass and surrounding mountain routes.
The National Weather Service warns that travel and outdoor activities could become very difficult or impossible during the warning period. The hazardous conditions are expected to impact both the late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning commutes, with the highest risk occurring during the early morning hours.
Strong winds may also cause extensive tree damage and could lead to power outages in higher-elevation communities. Officials urge residents and travelers to prepare for possible disruptions and to avoid mountain travel unless absolutely necessary.
Travel is strongly discouraged except for emergencies. Drivers who must be on the road are advised to carry a winter survival kit and be prepared for sudden road closures. If stranded, officials recommend staying with your vehicle until help arrives.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Wednesday afternoon as winds ease, though snow-covered and slick roads may persist into the evening. Travelers should continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and the Washington State Department of Transportation.
