Weld County, CO – A Weld County Sheriff’s deputy is being hailed as a hero after crawling into a burning, overturned vehicle late Tuesday night to help rescue two trapped children following a serious crash south of Highway 392.
According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), the crash occurred around 11 p.m. Tuesday on Weld County Road 33. The single-vehicle accident was described as a “double fatal” incident, with two children trapped inside as the vehicle caught fire.
Deputy Cody Kollath arrived at the scene along with other first responders and immediately squeezed through a broken rear windshield to reach the children. While flames burned beneath the vehicle, bystanders were able to extinguish the fire, allowing rescuers to work safely.
Once inside, Kollath comforted the children and communicated their conditions to other first responders. Fire personnel later cut through the car to stabilize and remove the trapped victims, with both children transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, authorities said.
“We are especially proud of Deputy Cody Kollath for his courageous actions and willingness to step up in a critical moment,” the Weld County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a statement Wednesday.
The CSP Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading the investigation and asks anyone who witnessed the crash but has not spoken with investigators to contact Colorado State Patrol Dispatch at (303) 239-4500, referencing case number VC250467.
