Des Moines, IA – Des Moines and Waterloo are experiencing record-breaking rainfalls, leading into a stormy forecast for the weekend. Residents should prepare for ongoing rain and thunderstorms, which may cause localized flooding and travel disruptions along I-35 and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service, Des Moines received 1.76 inches of rain on Wednesday, breaking the previous record of 1.72 inches from 1974. Meanwhile, Waterloo recorded 1.58 inches, surpassing its 1974 record of 1.21 inches. This heightened rainfall marks a continued wet pattern that could impact outdoor activities and road safety throughout the region.

For the rest of Thursday, Des Moines is expected to see areas of drizzle in the morning, followed by breezy conditions as temperatures fall to around 50°F. Clear skies are anticipated Friday, providing a temporary reprieve, with highs reaching 57°F. However, Saturday night brings a 90% chance of showers, with thunderstorms likely to follow into Sunday. Highs will reach the low 60s on Sunday, paired with strong rain potential.

Travelers and commuters should exercise caution, especially along major roadways such as I-35, as the risk of slick conditions and reduced visibility increases over the weekend. Heavy showers and potential thunderstorms are forecast to continue through Monday, impacting both residential and commercial areas.

Residents are advised to stay updated through local weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm periods. Any clearing is expected by Tuesday, with the next week starting off cooler and partly sunny.
