Eureka, CA – A powerful storm is set to hit Northern California beginning Thursday night, bringing heavy snow to mountain passes and rain to coastal areas. Travelers using U.S. Route 101 and other key highways are urged to prepare for delays and hazardous driving conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Eureka, significant snowfall is expected Friday into Saturday on passes such as Scott Mountain and Buckhorn Summit along State Route 299. Chains or snow tires will be required for vehicles navigating these areas. Rainfall in Eureka will begin Thursday night, with precipitation reaching 100% into Friday, accompanied by gusty winds up to 25 mph.

Temperatures in Eureka will remain mild, with highs around 52°F Thursday and 55°F Friday. Inland, however, conditions will worsen as snow accumulations could disrupt travel plans.

The NWS has also issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Humboldt and Del Norte counties, warning of dangerous sneaker waves through Wednesday morning. These large, unexpected waves pose a serious risk to beachgoers. Officials recommend staying off rocks and jetties and avoiding steep beaches during this time.

Looking ahead, rain will continue through Saturday, with conditions clearing slightly by Sunday. Travelers are advised to monitor local forecasts, avoid non-essential travel in mountain areas, and carry emergency supplies.
