Greenville, South Carolina – Triple-digit heat index readings are returning to the Carolinas today despite slightly cooler air temperatures, and forecasters warn scattered thunderstorms could bring sudden downpours and gusty winds through 8 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, maximum heat indices will reach between 101°F and 104°F across Upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina, with the most oppressive humidity centered near Greenwood, Spartanburg, and Anderson. A heat advisory has not been issued, but the humidity levels remain dangerously high for outdoor activity.

Thunderstorms will be scattered to numerous across the region by late afternoon, especially along I-85 from Gaffney to Toccoa, Georgia. Drivers should watch for reduced visibility, water ponding, and slick roads during the evening commute. Localized wind gusts and lightning may accompany stronger cells.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor exertion, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Charge devices in case of brief outages and secure loose outdoor items.

Though highs are slightly “cooler” than Tuesday, this is still one of the most humid days of the summer. More storms are possible Thursday, with continued heat and humidity through the weekend.
